Snowbird Blues
We often get customers coming in with their printers for various reasons; one of which being a print head printer which is not working properly or at all. This usually happens after a long period of non-usage. Whether you are a snowbird or spend most of the summer at the cottage, you might experience some issues when you try to print with this type of printer.
Most print head printers are Epson, Brother or Canon (except Canon PG/CL series of cartridges) and your cartridges are referred to as ink tanks. Ink tanks are just a vehicle to get the ink to the printer. Unlike HP, Lexmark and Dell print head cartridges, the print head for the Epson, Canon and Brother is in the printer. So the old adage, use it or lose it, in this case means lose the printer!
Obviously, the best solution is to try to print as often as possible to keep the tubes to the print head clear of ink blockages. If you are having some trouble, the best thing to do is to run a DEEP print head cleaning. Usually this option is available in the printer toolbox under the options or advanced options tab. You might have to run this cleaning five or more times to force the ink through the blockage. Another thing that we have tried for Canon printers was to fill up cartridges with a solution called nozzle rocket. We then send a print job, including all colors and black to the printer. After about 100 pages, we replace the nozzle rocket cartridges with ink filled cartridges and then try to print. This is a bit of a laborious task but it can save the printer!
Currently we can refill most ink tank cartridges, with the exception being the T078, 88, 98 and 99 series of Epsons. This is because there is a chip on this cartridge and a chip resetter has not yet been developed. We have just received a chip resetter for the new Canon 220/221 series of cartridges and all others can be refilled. Brother cartridges do not have any chip technology on them, so they can refilled on our special refilling machine. HP has just introduced printers which take the 920 and 564 series of cartridges which are ink tanks. These can be filled only one time and then the chip will not allow you to print. A chip resetter is under development.
