Some original equipment manufacturers have a cartridge send back program where you can put your cartridges in a prepaid envelope and then drive to the post office to send it back. Your package then goes to the central postal office via truck and then on to its final destination. I wonder how many miles a new cartridges travels to get to your local retailer and then how many to get back. Is this environmentally friendly? I think not.

A black inkjet cartridge refill could cost $12 for a 200 page yield, while a remanufactured toner cartridge could cost $55 for a 2,000 page yield, now that’s a huge difference!
Another benefit of using a toner cartridge is that you don’t run into drying up issues or blockages on print heads which can occur in cartridges for inkjet printers.

Refilling ink and toner cartridges is not a new phenomenon. The original founders of Cartridge World started their journey in Adelaide, Australia about 20 years ago. That lead to franchising and currently there are over 1,600 locations is over 35 countries. Many others were also experimenting at the same time. Trial and error and experimentation from these pioneers over the last 2 decades has lead to advanced techniques and outstanding quality making refilling/remanufacturing products, components and services a multi-billion dollar industry.

Refilling is the most environmentally responsible way to re-use a cartridge and reduce its carbon footprint. Most cartridges are manufactured overseas. The cost of getting a new cartridge to you in North America is a tough one on the environment. Some people send their cartridges back to the manufacturer in those bags they provide, but even this is an extra cost to the environment. Keep your cartridges local, have them refilled locally and reduce the carbon footprint. Every recycled laser cartridge saves landfill sites approximately 1.5kgs of solid waste. Did you know cartridges in landfill can take up to 450 years or more to decompose?
